When it's time to remove it
Not every home needs a full insulation removal. But there are a handful of situations where covering up the old material just seals the problem into your attic — and you'll pay for it later in comfort, air quality, and energy bills.
Droppings, urine, and shredded nesting material don't leave when the critters do. Laying fresh insulation on top just seals the contamination in and keeps you breathing it every time the HVAC runs.
A roof leak, poor ventilation, or condensation leaves insulation compressed and waterlogged — the R-value is gone and it becomes a breeding ground for mold that hurts indoor air quality.
Smoke and soot work deep into fiberglass and cellulose, leaving odor and fine particles your HVAC pulls through the house. Even insulation that looks untouched can be compromised and needs to come out.
Warm, moist air sneaks up through gaps, hits the cold roof deck, and condenses — the same cycle that fuels ice dams. You can't air-seal the attic floor properly with old insulation in the way.
When wind, hail, or a storm-damaged roof lets water into the attic, insulation soaks it up, loses its R-value, and can start growing mold. Storm-soaked insulation needs to come out before the moisture works into the drywall and framing below.
Insulation settles, shifts, and flattens over the years, costing you R-value. If yours is decades old, visibly flattened, dusty, or patchy, it may simply not be doing its job anymore.
Grayish-brown, pebbly insulation in a pre-1990s home may contain asbestos. Don't disturb it — it needs testing, and if positive, handling by a licensed abatement company. Leave it alone and call a pro.
Water stains, a musty smell, ice dams, or rooms that won't hold heat are all reasons to have the attic looked at. Our inspection tells you whether you need a full removal or just a top-off.
Contaminated material is vacuumed or hauled out, bagged, and taken to a proper facility — dusty, sometimes hazardous work that's a job for a professional crew, not a shop vac and a weekend.
What we haul out of your attic
Most attics are packed with loose-fill, blown-in, or batt insulation — and removing all of it cleanly is exactly what we're set up for, with commercial vacuum equipment, proper containment, and full haul-away and disposal. It's dusty, awkward work, and doing it right is the whole point.
Loose cellulose and blown-in fiberglass are pulled out with a high-powered commercial vacuum, then bagged and hauled to a proper disposal facility. Fast, contained, and far cleaner than a shop vac and a weekend.
Fiberglass and rock wool batts are pulled and hauled out by hand, then bagged for disposal. We clear the attic floor completely so nothing worn out or degraded gets left behind.
Insulation ruined by storm water, roof leaks, mold, or rodents has to come out completely, not covered over. We remove it, bag it, and disinfect the space so you're starting clean.
The honest math
It's tempting to see removal as an annoying extra step — like you're throwing away an investment you already made. But here's the honest math: if the insulation up there isn't working, your new insulation can't work either. You'd be paying to insulate over a problem instead of fixing it.
A properly sealed and insulated attic stops paying to heat the outdoors, where a huge share of your heating and cooling escapes.
Pulling out contaminated, moldy, or pest-soiled insulation means you're not recirculating that air through your home every time the HVAC runs.
Fixing the air leaks and ventilation behind the insulation tackles the actual cause of ice dams instead of just treating the symptoms.
Moisture doesn't stay in the insulation — it moves into your drywall, trusses, and roof deck. Removing it early protects your home's structure and its value.

Our attic refresh
When removal is the right call, here's what it looks like start to finish — clear, thorough, and matched to your specific attic.
We assess insulation condition and R-value, air and vapor barriers, ventilation, and any signs of moisture, mold, or animal intrusion.
We clear out and dispose of contaminated, damaged, or ineffective material so we can see and fix what's underneath. In rodent or fire cases, we deodorize before anything new goes in.
We install chutes to get proper airflow back — what prevents moisture buildup and ice dams in the first place.
We address gaps and penetrations, often with spray foam, to control air movement and moisture right at the source.
The system matched to your attic and built for long-term performance.
Done right, once, for good.
Most attic insulation removal projects wrap up in one to two days, depending on the size and complexity of the attic. We'll give you a clear timeline before we start and we won't leave any mess.
A fresh start
With the old insulation out and the attic clean, you've got a real choice about what goes back in. Some homeowners have us re-insulate right away as a turnkey job; others prefer to handle it on their own timeline. And if an inspection shows all you really need is a top-off rather than a full removal, we'll tell you straight — we won't sell you work you don't need.
Common questions
Let’s Get Started
Old insulation that’s wet, storm-damaged, moldy, or pest-contaminated doesn’t fix itself — and every season it stays up there, it costs you more in energy bills, air quality, and eventually repairs. Getting it out is the first step to an attic that finally performs. If something feels off up there, the best time to look is now — before it gets worse.
No pressure, no surprises. Just an honest look at your attic from people who know FM homes, inside and out.
